UHSG 2017 Pumpkin Carving Social

Yesterday, the UHSG hosted its annual pumpkin carving party.  Everyone brought their own pumpkin to carve or paint, and a treat to share.

Everyone had a great time, and we all ate lots of treats. By the end of the afternoon we had some beautiful finished pumpkins to take home.

Family Field Trip to Monkey Mountain and Eagle Park

We recently went to France and visited La Montaigne des Singes, or Monkey Mountain.

This park is home to more than 200 Barbary Macaques roaming free in a 60 acres forest.  We enjoyed walking around the park and feeding them popcorn .

After we visited Monkey Mountain, we headed over to another park in the area, La Volarie des Aigles, or Eagle Park. There was a wide variety of birds of prey to see, and they put on a really fantastic bird show.

Our Annual Sunshine Pumpkin Farm Tour

October is a special time of year here in Germany - the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, apples, and PUMPKINS.  Each year the UHSG visits Sunshine Pumpkin Farm in Gerhardsbrunn.

It was a beautiful fall day and we enjoyed our tour of the farm.

Sunshine Pumpkin Farm is not only known for their pumpkins.  They also sell fresh milk from their cows, honey, and other delicious homemade products.

After the tour, we rode out to the pumpkin patch in a trailer pulled by tractor.  Each child took their time choosing the perfect pumpkin.

We ended our day at the farm with hot cider and homemade pumpkin cake.

The UHSG Digs Into Learning at the Edelsteinminen Steinkaulenberg

At the end of September, we had the opportunity to visit Idar-Oberstein and explore the gemstone mines located there.

We learned about different types of precious stones and how they are created.

We also learned how the mine workers dug for gemstones.

After our tour of the mines, the kids (and parents) had fun digging and discovering some gems in the prospecting field. Each child went home with their very own geode.

Frankenstein Castle Ruin

The UHSG Hiking & Nature Club gathered at the Frankenstein Pfalz Burgruine last week.  This was a great location for our October meeting.

We rode the train right into Frankenstein.  The trail head was just a few meters from the station.

Our nature study focus for this month was mushrooms, so as we hiked the rundweg around the castle we looked closely for different mushrooms along the way.

After our hike, we spent some time exploring the Frankenstein Castle Ruin.  The views were spectacular!

After having some lunch and stopping for a coffee, we headed back home on the train.

The UHSG Visits Appel Happel

It's official! Fall is here, and one of our favorite ways to observe the season is with our annual visit to Appel Happel.

Even though our cold spring weather prevented apple picking this year, we still had a great time touring the orchard.

We also got to see how fresh apple juice is made.  It was delicious!

Hiking & Nature Club Begins an Adventurous New School Year

The UHSG Hiking and Nature Club kicked off the 2017/2018 school year with a hike around Potzberg Wildpark.

We hiked the Grosser Rundweg, which is a loop that circles around through forested areas and farmland.  There were some excellent views along the route.

Our nature study focus for this meeting was trees.  We had fun trying to identify the trees we saw along our hike, using some leaf identification sheets to help us out.

We found a LOT of blackberries, and even some elderberries.  These made for a tasty snack.

Our hike was close to five miles long, so we were all ready for a rest by the end.
